About Study Clubs

Study Clubs are groups of practicing dentists who meet regularly with the guidance of a mentoring dentist distinguished in that area of practice. Many mentors are certified dental specialists.

Continuing a tradition

The tradition of study clubs goes back to the father of modern dentistry, Dr. G. V. Black of Chicago. Late in the nineteenth century a group of Minnesota dentists invited Dr. Black to travel to Minneapolis to share his knowledge with them and the first study club was born. Seattle saw the formation of the first West Coast study club in 1906, and by 1936 the first BC study club was established in Vancouver. This tradition caught on strongly with West Coast dentists and continues so to this day.

Pursued by dedicated professionals

One of the current leaders of study club education is Dr. Dick Tucker of Ferndale, Washington, who heads a group of more than fifty study clubs worldwide, dedicated to the art of conservative dental goldwork. He epitomizes the virtue of dentists serving their patients by devoting leisure time to further honing clinical skills. This credo is shared universally by study club participants.

Open to all dentists

The Study Club Alliance will maintain a list of active study clubs, mentors, and member dentists.
